The objective of this study was to compare the responses of the cultivars Comum and Llanero of Brachiaria humidicola to excess water in the soil with the cultivar Marandu of Brachiaria brizantha. For this, the plants were grown in pots, under flooding, for 10 continuous days or in soil with free drainage. The decrease in leaf elongation rate, in plants grown in flooded soil, was greater in the Marandu cultivar, intermediate in the Llanero cultivar and lower
in the Common cultivar. Both cultivars of B. humidicola did not have the SPAD index affected by soil flooding, while plants of the cultivar Marandu
showed a significant reduction. The production of dry mass of leaves and roots was more reduced by soil flooding in cultivar Marandu and less in cultivar Llanero. The production of total dry mass followed the same pattern of response of the production of leaves and roots. The percentage of carbon allocation
for roots tended to be lower in flooded plants of all cultivars, and this reduction was greater in cultivar Marandu. The evaluated cultivars of B. humidicola differ in terms of relative tolerance to soil flooding. The Llanero cultivar of B. humidicola was relatively more tolerant to soil flooding than the Comum cultivar of this species. Both B. humidicola cultivars are more tolerant to soil flooding than the Marandu cultivar of B.
brizantha, which is highly susceptible to this stress.
