Cattle ranching is one of the main productive activities in the Brazilian Amazon. In recent decades, this activity has expanded
strongly in this region, a growth that should continue in the future. This text summarizes the challenges and evolution of cattle ranching in the Amazon
Brazilian history, including its historical beginning. The emphasis is placed on the last 40 years of experience accumulated in research activities on the management and recovery of degraded pastures in the Amazon, by Embrapa. This document represents an important contribution by Embrapa in this strategic area for food security, environmental preservation and economic growth in the Amazon region. The expectation is that this text will provide a new view on this area of knowledge, often misunderstood, being a valuable asset to influence investment decisions in research and public policies, in the Brazilian Amazon.
